$20 on MR 5 # 1

Good luck Lowey...

BLUES V AINSLIE PREVIEW

The Blues are up against Ainslie on Sunday in what is a must win to keep their finals hopes alive. Ainslie are coming off a really good showing against Belconnen last week, while the Blues are coming off a poor loss.

To make things even harder, the Blues are quite depleted this week with a good 1/3rd of the starting team MIA with Altus, Steamer, Cable, Eggo, Googs, and Budge all out.

So it will be a big challenge for the boys to get up in what promises to be a tight affair.

So come out and support the boys at 2pm on Sunday. There is a chance there will be a ferris wheel, dodgem cars, a spit roast, a big screen, a half time show, the Raiderette's, a few AFL stars signing autographs, and full live sports betting facilities on the game including next goal scorer. There is also a chance it will just be Stewie in the canteen serving pies and beer...

Either option sounds good, so get down to Chop park to support the boys...

Sick and sorry Blues fall to Jugs

The omens were poor all week, and Sundays performance at Stirling was a low point in the Blues season. With around half the team bedridden with flu for the majority of the week, training was almost non-existant for the Blues and it showed as they were outclassed and eventually towelled up by Murrumbidgee.

The Blues ran into a strong wind in the first term, and fought hard all across the ground. Five behinds were the Blues result - better than Freo last night but 16 points behind the Juggernauts who had kicked three relatively cheap goals. Steamers hammie packed it in, Dunny did his other ankle and the Band-Aid Blues were in all sorts of trouble.

Woden fought back quickly in the second term, controlling the ball and kicking three. The Jugs kicked 2, and the Blues were behind the 8-ball and in need of some more run and drive to take the match.

This failed to occur as the Blues were held scoreless, leaving Woden 7 goals behind at the final break and out of the match bar a miracle.

The miracle looked like it could appear when Pirate bombed a goal from 70, but it was too little too late - Murrumbidgee continued their dominace of the Blues and ended up 49 point winners.

The Blues are missing plenty of players next week and will need a major lift to get over Ainslie at Stirling.

Jugs 3.3 5.6 9.13 13.17.95
Woden 0.5 3.7 3.7 6.10.46
Goals: Googs 4 Pirate Eggo
Best: Eggo Pirate Googs Shicken Alt Butch

Weekend Preview

Its a big weekend in AFL Canberra Div 3 this weekend, with ANU taking on Harman for top spot, 3rd place ADFA forfeiting to Gungahlin, and the 4th placed Juggernauts hosting the 5th placed Blues at Stirling on Sunday. The match has a significant bearing on the top 4, with the victor going a game clear of 5th with 4 weeks remaining in the season.

Murrumbidgee have been in good form, easily beating Tuggeranong after getting within 7 points of ANU the week before.

The Blues have managed to string two wins together over Belconnen and Tuggeranong after the poor loss to Harman at Cooma, but are still struggling to field a consistant side week in week out. Last weeks match took its toll with a number of players injured and unlikely starters this weekend.

This will stretch the Blues depth, already stretched with season ending injuries to Seb, Vellie, Tits and Singhy. The Blues team will be named after training Friday night.

Woden have not beaten Murrumbidgee since 2006, so the Blues will be keen to arrest this trend and turn the tables on their fiercest rivals!

Bounce is at 2:15 at Stirling on Sunday

The Cooma Cats have the bye this weekend.

Woden keep the season on track

The Woden Blues headed to their traditional graveyard at Jamison and recorded their first win at the ground in Division 3.

The Blues had lost Steamer, Abes (hammie), Tits (ACL) and Junior through injury from the winning team a week before, with DU and Lynchy interstate and Jimmy OS. Into the side came Altie, Dicko, Shiv, JA, Butch, Eppa and Maso, giving a mix of size and strength.

From the opening bounce the Blues won the clearance and JA marked and goaled against his old club. The Blues had started the way they finished the week before, but were unable to convert the domination of possession with the wind. Belco kept coming and a couple of cheap goals gave them the lead at the first break, despite a second goal to JA and Cabbie..

The Blues vowed to work harder in the second term, assisted by some better matchups across the ground. Chiv had moved into a tagging role, avoiding the snipers cheap shots and instead concentrating on winning the ball every time it went near them. Eggo was dominating the centre of the ground, with Dicko in and under and getting the ball out to the Blues advantage every time. Altie and Maso were sharing the ruck duties and controlling play around the ground.

Defensively, Nato, Dunny, Pirate, Butch and Gows were repelling the Belco attacks and dried up the goals. Up forward, Cabbie and Googs began to take control, and the Blues opened a 3 goal lead by the main break after Googs sunk a bomb after the siren.
The Blues traditional 3rd quarter snooze came back as Belconnen kicked the first three into the wind and took the lead of the match back. It became a tough and physical game, never more apparent when Butch and Dunny had a huge collision ending Dunny's day. Woden worked back into the match, as Freddie seagulled and Vis and Carts lead strongly and hit the targets up forward. The Blues trailed by 3 points at the last break, but the words from Captain Altie brough the best out of the boys. Googs had brought his own ball taking a ton of marks but unable to capitalise. Belconnen kept fighting and launched attack after attack, but the Blues defence held strong with Nato, Butch and Budge all marking on their goal line before launching Blues attacks.
The Blues were on top, and never more evident than when the Magpies streamed forward and switched the ball to a 3 on 1, a goal looking inevitable - however Lawny intercepted, took the mark and played on, setting up another major for the Blues.

It was a big victory for the Blues, the 28 point margin being a good reward for the best 3 quarter performance of the year.

Mapgies 4.2 6.4 12.5 12.5.77
Woden 3.2 9.5 11.8 15.15.105
Goals: Googs 5, Cabbie 4, JA2, Shicken Carts Eggo
Best: Shiv, Eggo, Pirate, Googs, Altie, Cabbie, Carts

Woden take on traditional rivals Murrumbidgee in the Showdown at Stirling next Sunday. Its going to be a blockbuster - and the winner will be in the best position to play finals footy. The Blues have not beaten Murrumbidgee since 2006 and are keen to turn that around.

Welcome to the Show

It was one way traffic at Stirling on Saturday as the Woden Blues recorded their highest score of the year against Tuggeranong, with a Div 3 goalkicking club record set by Googs.

The Blues had a huge number of changes from last week with Eppa and Altie out injured, Robbie back playing for the Cats and Dicko, Maso and Chiv absent. Coming into the side came Jimmy and Wayne making club debuts, with Abes earning a recall along with Cabbie, Tits and Fredalenko.

From the opening bounce the Blues dominated, Boo kicking the opening goal in the first minutes, quickly followed by Schicken. Googs took some time to get the radar going before potting his first major as the Blues lead by 35 at the first break. It had been a torrid quarter with the Blues losing Steamer, Junior and Tits to game ending injuries - Tits lasting all of 30 seconds before reinjuring his knee. Cabbie lasted into the second term before his day ended as well and the Blues had no bench by half time...
The Blues backline was in good form with Pirate and Nato exceptional under pressure. The midfield led by Eggo was performing well, and Schicken rucked tirelessly. The Blues kicked 8 goals in the second term, and if it wasn't for some inaccurate shooting would have racked up the ton by half time.

The Blues thought the game over at the long break and fell asleep, allowing Tuggeranong to kick 3 goals in 5 minutes before regaining some composure. Lead by some hard runing by Pirate, Lawny and great disposal from Wayne, the Blues rebound returned. Freddie and Vis were making great contests up forward and bringing the ball to ground each time - but it was the Googs show, as his radar returned and the goals flowed.
The final term was all one way traffic as the demoralised Hawks struggled to stay in the game. Goals to Eggo and Vis continued the enslaught as Googs racked up 15.6 for the game...

Woden 5.6 13.11 18.16 26.18.174
Hawks 0.1 2.2 6.2 7.3.45
Goals: Googs 15 Fred 3 Vis Eggo 2, Schicken Carts Boo Lawny 1
Best: Googs Pirate Budge Fredalenko Schicken Viss

The Blues take on Belconnen at Jamison next Sunday in a Cats double header, and will be sweating on the fitness and availability of a number of players.

A good week on the track will help, so everyone is expected to train twice this week - it will be hard for the coaching staff to drop players after this performance.

Thanks also to Seb and Tits for the photos this week.

Weekend Preview

Round 12 sees the Woden Blues take on the Tuggeranong Hawks at Stirling on Saturday at 2:15. The Blues will be without a number of stars due to injury and absence, but should be able to account for the young, fast and hard running Hawks.

The Blues finals chances dropped slgihtly after the loss last weekend, but a win this weekend would see the boys back within touch of the 4, and with their destiny in their own hands.

Tuggeranong have proven to be a competitive side up until the last month, but will go into this game thinking they are a chance of stealing a major upset.

The Cooma Cats are heading to Goulburn to play the undefeated Swans at 2pm Saturday.

Blues given a dose of Hog Flu...

The Blues Boys headed up into the mountains for the first time since 2004 to take on the Harman Hogs in a SMO Double Header weekend.

The Blues had a number of changes with Seb (ankle), Cabbie (newborn), Abes and Fredalenko all out, and JA a late withdrawal with the flu. Into the side came Maso, Tatts and Dunny, with Boo and Cooma star Rob Stapleton doubling up and playing for the Blues as well as a full game with the Cats.

The Blues started the match well and dominated possession in the first quarter, but were unable to convert. Harman scored first with a quick goal but the Blues steadied and began to run and use the ball well. A good mark and goal by Maso opened the Blues account, but a number of relatively easy shots were missed and the Blues trailed by 2 points going into the first break.

As has been the case the last couple of weeks, Eggo was again outstanding in the middle, with Dicko also putting together a purple patch of footy. An injury to Altie saw him take no further part in the match as the Hogs got on a roll and put on 6 goals to the Blues single major.

The halftime spray was deserved, and the Blues came out with more intent. Nato, Dunny, Pirate, Chiv and Junior were all beginning to win their battles down back, and Googs became the star up forward kicking 4 goals for the term. The Blues had bravely brought the margin back to 2 kicks when Harman put a late goal on the board.

Robbie Stapleton was putting his already tired body on the line across half forward and created a number of chances, and was rewarded with a final term major.

The Blues fought hard but Harman kept going, and a couple of late goals in the cold and gloom pushed the margin out to 30 points, probably a fair reflection of the difference of the day. Woden's wastefulness in front of goal was reflected in the stat that both teams had the same number of scoring shots, but Harmans overall effectiveness in the strong cross breeze killed off the Blues revival.

Woden 1.5 2.6 6.9 8.10.58
Harman 2.1 8.2 10.3 14.4.88
Goals: Googs 5 Vis Maso Robbie 1
Best: Eggo Googs Junior Nato Pirate Dicko

A big thanks to the Cooma Cats who hosted us on the day. The Blues hope the day promoted AFL in Cooma, and the Cats will be better off for the exercise.

The Blues next match is against Tuggeranong next SATURDAY at Stirling at 2:15.
